The story revolves around three New York police officers over one week. Eddie (Richard Gere) is a patrolman who only has 7 days left before he can pull the pin and retire. Eddie has seen it all, and he has become so disenchanted with life that he must find some reason each day not to blow his own brains out. Undercover cop Tango played by Don Cheadle has been on the streets too long, causing him to protect Caz (Wesley Snipes) the drug kingpin target he is out to catch. Sal (Ethan Hawke) is a narcotics cop who is under tremendous pressure to provide a healthy home for his pregnant wife and two children. This stress from home and the temptation of all that drug money at his job is causing him to jump back and forth from being a good cop to a bad cop. In the end, all three police officers will eventually come together.

The merciless head of The Dark Stone, the Wheel King (Wang Xueqi), has assigned a trio of his top assassins, Lei Bin (Shawn Yue), Zhanqing (Barbie Hsu), and The Magician (Leon Dai), to kill those around Zeng as a warning and to offer her a choice: hand over Bodhi's remains and walk away, or die... Predictably, when Zeng Jing hands over the remains, the Wheel King renigs on his offer and tries to kill Zeng Jing anyway. Barely escaping the Wheel King, she runs home in a vain attempt to flee with Jiang. Unable to fend off the Dark Stone any further, Zeng collapses, but is saved by Jiang, who reveals his true identity: Zhang Renfeng! He defeats the Dark Stone assassins and then tracks down and challenges the Wheel King to take revenge for his father's murder. This leads to a lethal triangle and a fight to the death between Zeng, Jiang, and The Dark Stone. Only one question remains: who will be the last one standing to uncover the secret of Bodhi's remains?
